What is Functional Medicine, Anyway?

Alternative. Holistic. Natural. Traditional. Mainstream. Allopathic. Herbal. There are so many categories of medicine. It can get a little overwhelming, even to the practitioner! Hopefully I can shed a some light on what makes functional medicine different.

Functional medicine doesn’t just look for symptoms and diagnoses. It’s root-cause medicine. Functional medicine goes beyond the prescription to help patients really figure out not just what’s happening to their bodies, but why. It truly is patient-focused care, that understands body, mind and spirit are all key to optimal health.

As a functional medicine practitioner, I work to investigate the environmental mismatch that leads to autoimmune conditions. If that sounds complex, it’s because it is! The unique combination of genetics, environment, hormones, microbiome, diet, mental health and history that goes into who we all are today is not just the key to figuring out where it all went wrong. It’s the key to figuring out how to find balance again. How to calm an overexcited immune system. How to re-teach your body that it’s safe, so you can get back to loving life in your skin.
